The International Exlibris Competition Varna is a biennial, organized by Largo the Art Gallery since 2014. In August 2020 will be held the fourth edition. Artistic Director of the competition is the well-known Bulgarian artist Julian Jordanov. In the previous editions, the Jury of the event was led by very popular exlibris artists as prof. Hasip Pektas from Turkey and assoc. prof. Dimo Kolibarov from Bulgaria.
In the past three editions of the competition took part more than 620 artists from more than 50 countries all over the world. About 2204 artworks were received for the competition and 532 bookplates were presented in the exhibitions. In these three editions were given 69 prizes, honourable mentions and certificates of honour.
In the years winners and participants of the competition were such magnificent and famous artists as Oleh Denisenko, Konstantin Antioukhin, Sergiy Hrapov, Ulyana Turchenko, Konstantin Kalynovych from Ukraine, Lembit Lohmus from Estonia, Hristo Kerin, Petar Chinovsky, Veselin Damyanov-Ves, Hristo Naidenov, Dimo Kolibarov, Desislav Gechev from Bulgaria, Lukasz Cywicki, Pavel Delekta from Poland, Jury Jakovenko, Vladislav Kvartalnyj, Roman Sustov, Eugenia Timoshenko from Belarus, Martin Baeyens, Christine Deboosere, Frank Ivo Van Damme from Belgium, Mauricio Schvarzman from Argentina, Renata Rea Simlikova, Gunter Hujber from Czech Republic, Ivo Mosele, Maria Maddalena Tuccelli from Italy, Yuriy Nozdrin, Vladimir Vereschagin from Russia and many others.
Since its first edition, the International Exlibris Competition is supported by the Varna Municipality. The support of the Varna Municipality is important because it strengthens the importance of the competition as an event that fits well into the cultural calendar of the city and as an initiative that contributes keeping the image of Varna as a European festival city.
Other important institutions also support Varna exlibris biennial. Since 2014 the Association of Artists – Varna, as well as the Istanbul ExLibris Society provide prizes in the competition.
As the organizer of the forum, Largo Art Gallery gives its modest contribution to the promotion of graphics and exlibris among the young generation. The selected works of every edition were shown as travelling exhibitions in three national art schools in Bulgaria, in Varna cultural centres, which works exclusively with students and young people and in private galleries in different cities in Bulgaria.
In 2020 Largo Art Gallery will have the honor and the great opportunity to present the best bookplates from the fund of the competition in an exhibition at the graphic art gallery Epreuve d’Artiste in Antwerpen, Belgium.
Largo Art Gallery was founded in November 2008 in Varna, Bulgaria. The gallery presents contemporary art and works with artists from all around the world.
